Run by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Graduate School, it explores the science, math, and technology behind the news of the day, and presents topics in a clear, accessible, and accurate manner. It has a new science article every week-there are now hundreds in the archives as well as many images and interactive features.

Bill Nye the Science Guy
The Web site for the show of the same name, there are lots of cooling things on this site that you can share with your students. The home demos will be useful for various topics in the text.
 
Reeko's Science Page
The experiments range in difficulty, but they're all pretty easy. Almost anyone would be able to perform the "advanced" experiments, though adult supervision is advised. Only simple and inexpensive materials are required. Everything is worded cleverly and invitingly. The graphics are detailed and add to the site's overall appearance. Great to try in-class or at home.
 
Countertop Chemistry
The site contains experiments involving chemical changes (dancing spaghetti); physical changes (Ziploc bag chemistry); properties of gases (floating candles) and colloids (oobleck, gluep and clear slime polymer). The text is for teacher use, but the experiments can be adapted for elementary students.

CBC News Indepth

Nebraska Earth Systems Education Network
The geology lessons are simple and require common materials. Content is broken into elementary, middle, and secondary levels.

Geological Survey of Canada Educational Sites
This site offers an overview of resources and links supporting Earth Science lessons.
 
US Geological Survey
Although the content has a decidedly American focus, the animations and suggested links are very useful. Additional content for other science topics is also available.
 
Teaching With The Web
Excellent Earth Science lesson plans for various grade levels, many geology links (including ThinkQuest projects), and on-line activities in all areas of science.
 
The Savage Earth
Enjoy the excellent quality visuals, text and animations from PBS (Public Broadcasting Service). This site offers links to support all concepts in chapter 8 and 9. Plan to spend a lesson here. The reading level is challenging.
 
ENC On-Line
There are many geology web links and summaries provided on this site. This is a K-12 Math and Science On-Line teacher centre with a resource search function and educational articles database.
 
Exploring the World of Earth Science
Excellent visualizations and investigations make this one of the best graphical Earth Sciences Web sites on the Internet! The Earth News, a weekly summary of earth science events around the world dating as far back as 2002, can be viewed here.

Minerals and Metals: A World to Discover
A very useful site with engaging "tours" that allow you to examine how minerals and metals play a role in your daily life. Afterwards, take the test to see what you've learned! Be sure to check out the "Start a Mine" feature. Although the focus is mining, the information provides good enrichment content and a thorough glossary.

This project is unique in the way the Earth's Crust is being studied. The Quick Time movie may be useful to show in class, but much of the text is teacher background information.

Provides a concise overview of an expedition in the Sea of Cortez and profiles deep sea floor geology and life forms. Check out "News from the Deep" for some useful in-class demonstrations.

Geological Survey of Canada
This is the place to start. Many links to data on earthquake activity (in all areas of Canada), maps of seismic activity, and links to Tsunami information.
 
Maps and Lists of Recent Earthquakes
This material quickly dispels the notion that quakes only happen once in awhile. The maps are excellent depictions of the on-going seismic activity in British Columbia.

Current and reliable information about volcanoes in B.C. and throughout Canada. Try the hazards link for a blackline master of a volcano cross-section.
 
Volcanoes (US Geological Survey)
Useful lesson plans and activities are included in the teacher's guide and blackline masters. Background information is suitable for teachers and students.
 
Volcano's Deadly Warning (PBS)
High quality photos from the documentary of the same name. Use the Teacher's Guide for an overview of the program. The program is available for purchase. Search the archives for other Earth Science topics.
 
Geological Survey of Canada
The text is suitable for high school students but the photos are worth looking at. Click on the different areas of the Volcano Map and print them out for your students in black and white.
 
USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory
The Educational Outreach site is very comprehensive. Try the interactive Cascades map or looking at the current volcano images.
 
How Volcanoes Work
An award-winning site with many pictures illustrating volcanic landforms, eruption products, and volcanoes on other worlds. The reading level may be too difficult for elementary students but it would be suitable as a "challenge activity".
