The MozaMbique Civil War
The Mozambique civil war began in 1977, only two years after the country gained independence from Portugal. Before peace was declared in 1992, about 1 million people died in the conflict or from starvation; another 5 million civilians were displaced.
Mabunda finds inspiration in traditional African art and modern artists like Picasso.
Objects of destruction take on anthropomorphic forms in Mabunda’s art.
