# Chapter 6 - Code Crackers

## INTRODUCTION

Cryptograms are secret messages or codes. People have been using cryptograms to send important information for many centuries. Cryptograms were very important in World War II when both armies had to keep their messages secret from the other side. Every letter is usually assigned another letter or a number and the message can only be decoded if you have the right key. That way, only the people who are supposed to read the message can read it and everyone else can only see a jumbled up message.

Investigate different uses for cryptograms on the internet. After you have learned about how cryptograms work, using multiplication, you will create a cryptogram for your classmates to solve.

## THE PROCESS

1. Research information on cryptology at the Build a Code website. Use the to keep track of all the different terms and words you need to know.
2. Navigate to the Cryptograms Weekly at word-game-world.com website to solve a cryptogram. Copy and paste the cryptogram into a word document to save some paper. If you need a hint, scroll down to the bottom of the page for the key, which will help you solve the puzzle.
3. Create a cryptogram sample at Kidzone - Cryptogram Maker website. Follow the instructions on the page to create your own cryptogram.
4. Create a chart with multiplication problems and products for each letter A-Z using the Crack the Code worksheet .  Do not repeat any products or problems. Decide on a message to send to a friend and make sure your message is between 3-5 sentences long. After you have decided on your message, write the code that matches it using your completed chart.  Put blanks underneath each letter and put at least five spaces between each word.  Write down at least two clues to help solve your cryptogram.  If you can’t to decide on a way to present your cryptogram, ask your teacher to find the sample multiplication cryptogram.
