Chapter 8 -Designing a Get-away retreat

INTRODUCTION

You have been hired to design a get-away retreat for your boss. You must follow her very specific requirements to keep her happy!

THE TASK

To get ready for this special assignment, you need a solid understanding of area and perimeter is required. Once you show mastery through grid paper drawings, you will design and draw the floor plan for your boss' house.

You must follow specific plans that she wants to see in her home. Be sure to consider the lay-out of a house and where you will place everything.

Your final product will be a floor plan and a drawing of how the house will look from the front.

THE PROCESS

You will sharpen your skills as an architect by practising on the following websites. You boss does not want you practising on her house. She wants you to be a fully trained architect first!

Go to the Area Explorer and Perimeter Explorer websites. Read the instructions carefully and practice finding the area of ten different figures. Copy your favourite figure onto grid paper, including the area and perimeter with the correct units for both.
As a final review, go to the Math Goodies - Area and Math Goodies - Perimeter websites. Read the instructions carefully and complete exercises 1-3 on both sites. You may need to use pencil and grid paper. Print out page 2 of both activities to show your teacher.
Read through the Letter from your boss to get a good idea of all of the requirements of her house. Use the grid paper supplied in the floorplan worksheet to create her floor plan, making sure you include everything she askes for.
Once you have finished the floor plan, draw a picture of the front of the home. Write a letter to your boss explaining the area and perimeter of each room and explain your design in detail. Submit your work for her approval.
