User Instructions for Internet Explorer

Due to compatibility issues between Internet Explorer and SMART Notebook, Internet Explorer users may have trouble opening the SMART Notebook files.

Files should be downloaded by clicking Save, (not Open or Run) in the File Download box. Then, the file extension should be changed from .zip to .notebook.

Windows XP Users

Windows Vista and Windows 7 Users

Windows XP Users

There are two methods for Windows XP: rename when downloading, or rename after downloading.

Option 1: Rename when downloading

Follow the instructions below when downloading a SMART Notebook file. If you have already downloaded the file (using Save not Open), follow the rename after downloading instructions.

  1. Choose Save (do not choose Open).


  1. In the window that appears, do the following:
    1. Change Save as type: to All Files.
    2. Change the .zip to .notebook in the file name.
    3. Click Save.


Once you have downloaded the file, you should be able to open it using SMART Notebook or SMART Notebook Express.

Option 2: Rename after downloading

After the file is saved (choose Save, not Open, when downloading), the extension should be changed from “.zip” to “.notebook”. If file extensions aren’t visible, follow the steps below to display them.

If file extensions are visible, right-click on the file, choose Rename, then change ".zip" to ".notebook" in the file name, and press Enter.

  1. Open up any folder (like My Documents or My Computer).
  2. Click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
  5. Click OK.

Your computer should now show file extensions (like. notebook and .zip).Right-click on the file,choose Rename, then change ".zip" to ".notebook" in the file name, and press Enter.

NOTE: If the file appears to have two extensions (.zip.notebook), change it to just ".notebook".

You should be able to open the file using SMART Notebook or SMART Notebook Express.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 Users

When downloading the SMART Notebook file, choose Save, not Open. Once the file is saved to your computer, you will need to change the file extension. Right-click on the file, choose Rename, then change ".zip" to ".notebook" in the file name. If ".zip" is not visible in the file name, follow the instructions below.

  1. Open up any folder (like Documents or Computer). Click Organize.
  2. Click Folder and search options.

  1. Click the View tab.
  2. Scroll down to Hide extensions for known file types and un-check the checkbox.
  3. Click OK.

Your computer should now show file extensions (like. notebook and .zip). Right-click on the file,choose Rename, then change ".zip" to ".notebook" in the file name, and press Enter.

NOTE: If the file appears to have two extensions (.zip.notebook), change it to just ".notebook".

You should be able to open the file using SMART Notebook or SMART Notebook Express.
