Surf for More Math

Lesson 1 - Exploring Pattern Expressions

 

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Exploring Pattern Expressions, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Isometric Grid lets students build different patterns.

To use Isometric Grid, click on the grid button to hide or show gridlines or a pinboard. Determine the grid size, by clicking on the "Grid Size" button. Click the rhombus button to select a rhombus, or a click the triangle button to select a triangle. Select the colour for the shape from the slide up menus. Click on the lock button to lock or unlock the colour function. Click on the shape, and then the grid to place the shape. Click on the elastic band button (the triangle with dots at each vertex), to select the number of points in the elastic band. Students can manipulate the points to create new shapes.

Have students create patterns on the isometric grid and describe the patterns.

Click the "Reset" button to start again. Click the "Quit" button to exit.

 

Describing a Pattern lets students explore patterns and prompts your child to describe them.

To use Describing a pattern, click on the play button in each figure and have students describe the pattern that emerges.

 

Cyber Pattern Player lets students create sound patterns they can hear and see.

To use Cyber Pattern Player, click on the yellow squares to hear the pattern. Click the "Next" button to hear and see more complicated patterns. Each horizontal row is a different instrument. Click on any of the squares to turn a sound on, click on the square again and the sound turns off. Click on the "Funky Pattern" buttons to hear pre-made patterns. The "More Sounds" button loads new sounds into the player. Click the "Erase All" button to clear all patterns. Have students create new patterns.
