Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about making change. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs. GoalCalculate change from purchases.
Builds UponStudent Book pages 11211 Instructions for UseChange Maker provides students with practice calculating change from purchases. To use Change Maker, choose a difficulty level, and then click the Canadian flag to choose Canadian currency. Figure out how much money you would get back when you pay a given amount for an item. Then under each appropriate bill or coin, enter the number of bills or coins that make up the amount that you would get back. If you get the answer right, the amount of change is added to your piggy bank. If you get the answer wrong, the correct amount of change is subtracted from your piggy bank. The more money you get in your piggy bank, the harder the questions become.
Change Due lets students practice counting money and determining the fewest coins needed to make the correct change. To use Change Due, scroll down and click the "Start" button. Determine the total amount of change due using the fewest coins needed to make the correct change. Start with the highest denomination of coins or bills. Click on a number beside a coin or bill to indicate how many of that type of coin or bill you need. Use as many of these as possible without exceeding the amount of change due. Click "Check Answer" to see the correct amount of change due.
Subtracting Money prompts students to subtract the difference between two amounts of money. To use Subtracting Money, scroll down and click the "Start Subtraction" button. Input the answer in the text box next to the "check" button, and then click the "check" button. Compare your time and scores with a partner or with your previous scores.
