Web Quest

Chapter 12

TASK

This Web Quest continues with the kite theme used in the Chapter 12 Chapter Task. It offers students further practice in the area of fractions. Students will visit a series of websites that will allow them to look at a large variety of different kites styles. Students will be responsible for choosing 4 kites that they will describe using fractions of area, which they will also express as decimals, and using fractions of a set.

GOALS

•  select 4 kites that are describable using fractions

•  describe a kite using fractions of area

•  express fractions of an area using decimals

•  describe a group of kites using fractions of a set

•  save and insert pictures from the Internet with a minimum amount of guidance

MEETING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS

•  If students have difficulty inserting pictures into the fact sheet, they can print the pictures and cut and paste them into the fact sheet.

•  Some students may have difficulty choosing kites that will be suitable for the task. Have these students try to describe briefly these kites using fractions before adding them to their fact sheet to avoid frustration later in the task.

•  Information about kites is readily available on the World Wide Web. To add another dimension to the activity, have students use a search engine to find their own kite websites.

•  To incorporate a non-mathematical element into the Web Quest, have the students find 3 interesting facts about kites.

INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE

  1. Together, read the Introduction and Task section of the Web Quest. Address any questions or difficulties at this point.
  2. Allow students time to look at the different websites and choose 4 kites to describe. While they are doing this, assure that they are choosing kites that are appropriate for the task.
  3. Have students insert the pictures in their documents and begin completing their chart. Observe and/or interview the students to see how they are interpreting and carrying out the task.
  4. As a conclusion to the task, you may want students to share with the class or in groups descriptions of their favourite kites.
