Lesson 5 - Elapsed Time

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Elapsed Time, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Goals

Use math language to describe the relationships between minutes and hours.

Estimate and measure the passage of time in minutes and hours.

Instructions for Use

Elapsed Time lets students practice reading clocks and determining the elapsed time given a starting time and an ending time.

To use Elapsed Time, select either See mode or Guess mode.

In See mode, have students make the middle clock read the same time as the Ending Time clock. The middle clock starts out reading the same time as the Starting Time clock. As students increment the time on the middle clock, the total elapsed time will display next to the label Elapsed Time .

In Guess mode, have students determine and enter the elapsed time between the Starting Time and Ending Time clock in the text boxes. Once the time is entered, the middle clock will advance the amount of time entered. If the centre clock reads the same time as the Ending Time clock, then the time entered is correct and a "Good Job!" message is displayed. If the answer is incorrect the user will be told whether the time entered is too great or too small and may try again.

Jude e-Clock lets students move the hands of a clock by different time intervals.

To use Jude e-Clock, have students click the plus or minus buttons beside each measure of time to watch the hands on the clock change. To measure elapsed time students can click on the "elapsed time" button on the left side of the screen and enter in a start and end time to display. Students can also change the face of the clock by clicking the "change clock face" button to see how different clock faces represent given times.
