Lesson 8 - Solving Addition Problems by Modelling

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about solving addition problems by modelling. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Goals

Add a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number, with regrouping.

Describe and explain problem-solving strategies.

Instructions for Use

Base Ten Block Addition lets students practice adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number.

To use Base Ten Block Addition, click the "Next Problem" button to complete an addition problem. Starting with the "1's" column and working your way over to the "1000's" column, look for blocks that can be grouped to form a larger base ten block unit. To group blocks to create a larger unit, click and hold down the mouse while dragging a rectangle to lasso the blocks. When you have selected the correct number of blocks, the blocks will join together to create the larger unit block. Drag the newly grouped unit into the column to the left. The addition solution will appear in the area on the left.

To play Build a Frame, drag the number of dots unto the frame from the bank. Click the "Check Answer" button to see if the answer is correct. Click the "New" button for a new question.

To play Fill a Frame, count how many dots are needed to fill a frame. Input the answer in the text box, and click the "Check Answer" button to see if the answer is correct. You can drag counters from the bank to help you answer the questions. Click the "New" button for a new question.

To play Add with Frames, drag the number of dots into each frame to answer the equation. Click the "Check Answer" button to see if the answer is correct. Then combine the number of dots to answer the equation and input the answer in the text box. Click the "Check Answer" button to see if the answer is correct. Click the "New" button for a new question.
