How does Nelson Science and Technology Perspectives cultivate a deep sense of discovery through the development science skills and inquiry?

Nelson offers a wide range of opportunities for inquiry from quick and easy hands-on activities to experimental investigations. No other resource offers the range of lower order observational activities to higher order investigations then does Nelson Science and Technology Perspectives!

  • Try This are mini investigations that provide a quick reinforcement of a concept that students will learn. These short activities employ easy-to-find materials and don’t require a lab.

  • Perform an Activity are hands-on exercises that provide opportunities for students to perform non-experimental investigations.  Students experience phenomena first hand, but are not expected to answer a testable question, develop hypotheses, or make predictions.

  • Explore an Issue Critically sections represent one of the main vehicles for achieving the STSE expectations of the curriculum. A skills menu identifies the science process skills required for this activity – all connected to the companion skills handboo. These exercises are ideal for making rich STSE connections and developing critical thinking and decision-making skills

  • Solve a Technological Problem activities involve the development, testing, and implementation of a device, model, technique or approach. Similarly, the skills menu focuses on problem-solving skills

  • Conduct an Investigation provides opportunities for students to develop appropriate science process skills through relevant, interesting scientific investigation that involves hypothesizing, making predictions, experimentation, fair testing, and controlling variables.  Students use the results of experiments to answer a testable question.

  • Support for numeracy skills include measurement and measuring tools, solving quantitative problems using the GRASS method, using significant digits and scientific notation, and working with data tables and graphs
  • The skills handbook provides support for the skills and processes of science and technology, lab safety, and communicating in scientific terms
