Inservice Session Descriptions
|
1. Literacy Development
Gradual Release of Responsibility in Second Language
Learning Objective: participants will work with literacy strategies as they develop an understanding of how to create autonomous and self-reflective students.
Target Audience: Grades 4-8 Core French teachers
Growing independent learners is a process that takes time and nurturing. This session uses the gradual release of responsibility model from first language literacy and tailors it to the needs of the second language student. Participants will work with a series of approaches for modeling new learning, encouraging shared practice, guiding that practice and finally moving students to working independently – all done using the lens of where second language students are in their own language development. We will also investigate metacognitive strategies to ensure students are active participants in their own learning.
2. Differentiated Instruction
Making Differentiation Manageable in Core French
Learning Objective: participants will use a variety of instructional strategies that help them tailor instruction for all learners
Target Audience: Grades 4-9 Core French teachers
Teachers are continously striving to align teacher and learner intelligences for maximum achievement, but this can be a time-consuming goal. This session will provide teachers with manageable planning and instructional tools for differentiating instruction in the second language classroom. Recognizing that one size doesn’t fit all, the session will encourage teachers to explore various ways to differentiate their instruction through grouping, and diverse student centered strategies that are based on the readiness of each student. Both the What – content, process, product and environment -- as well as the How – readiness, interests, learning profile -- of differentiating instruction will be focused on.
3. Assessment
Assessing for Success
Learning Objective: participants will learn new ways of planning and assessing with the end in mind.
Target Audience: Grades 4-8 Core French teachers
What are the Big Ideas around Assessment? How can assessment guide me in tailoring my instruction to suit the needs of my students? These questions will be answered in a low-risk but thought-provoking environment. With a focus on developing lesson plans with assessment in mind, this session will illustrate how to plan with a clear view to what you want your students to learn. Strategies for helping students develop their facility in second language as well as detailed descriptions and examples of various assessment tools are discussed.
4. Professional Learning Communities
Teaching, learning, researching – towards best practices
Learning Objective: participants will learn about PLCs and best practices within learning communities. They will also see what their school can achieve through this learning process.
Target Audience: Grades 4-9 Core French teachers
The goal of a professional learning community is to provide a way for teachers to investigate best practices that improve teaching and learning. School staff who work together in targeted and investigative ways, are better able to build upon successes and minimize negative experiences. This session will introduce you to the concept of PLCs and what they can do for your school. You will explore approaches for organizing a PLC as well as appropriate action research topics for making it a beneficial experience.
5. Technology
Engaging Second Language Learners in the 21st Century
Learning Objective: participants will see what is both current and coming in the world of technology for second language students.
Target Audience: Grades 4-9 Core French teachers
How can we use technology to engage our students? New literacies are becoming a part of our educational landscape and technological literacy is nothing new to 21st century students. What are technology–focused second language classrooms doing and how can we use those ideas tomorrow? This session will share how teachers and schools are using podcasts, blogs, wikis, and the Internet to engage grades 4-9 students. Come to share your ideas and to see what works!
