4.0 OverviewCanada 1823 - Natural Resources Canada The Atlas of Canada - Government of Canada A map of Canada c. 1823. The site allows the user to zoom in on specific areas for greater detail. Buttons allow for a detailed description of each map, as well as statistical information about several geographical points. Maps can be printed.
4.1 Migration and SettlementHistory of Birchtown's Black Loyalists A description of the Birchtown Loyalists settlement with links to other sites containing information and histories of black settlement in Canada. Mennonite Historical Society of Canada A history of the Mennonites in North America and Canada. Click the Site Map link and then History. A reprinting of the primary document, with commentary (see figure 4.1.9). A biography of painter Paul Kane, with links to many of his works that are housed in the Royal Ontario Museum. Descriptions are provided.
4.2 Society and CommunityShanawdithit Drawings - Memorial University of Newfoundland A reprint of the book The Beothucks or Red Indians The Aboriginal Inhabitants Of Newfoundland , by James P. Howley (Cambridge University Press, 1915). The site has images of Shanawdithit's life, that she created herself. Descriptions are also provided. Native Religions in Newfoundland The main page for the site above. The site offers more insight into Aboriginal life, including the Boethuk, Mi'kaq, Innu, and Inuit. An article describing the origins of the Métis, including a description of the Red River Colony. The article continues to describe the Red River Rebellion and Métis way of life.
4.3 Economy and TechnologyHistoric HBC - The Hudson's Bay Company A site created by the Hudson's Bay Company describing their history, with links to various related topics and articles. Also included are numerous images. Significant Dates in Nova Scotia's Railway History - Railway Archives of Canada A timeline of the earliest steam engines and steam locomotives in Canada. The site describes the use of these machines, with link to articles on railway history.
4.4 Government and PoliticsCivilization.ca - Tsimshian Society and Culture Information on Tsimshian society, organized in subject headings: Shamanism, trade, warfare, wealth, and rank. William Lyon Mackenzie - Canadian Encyclopedia A biography of William Lyon Mackenzie, with links to articles on the Rebellions of 1837.
