This is the UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions Web site. The page refers to the legal code for transportation in England. Point 105 refers to stopping distances. Information on stopping distances for large and small vehicles such as trucks and motorcycles, respectively. It includes a chart showing typical stopping distances at various speeds, given in mph.
The Institute for Traffic Care Web site, part of the European Union
Ministry of Science and Culture, has produced this Web site discussing
the issues around tailgating. This site has quite an extensive section
on tailgaters. Includes pictures, Dutch police case studies, and reports
on implementation of German video technology in order to monitor sections
of roadway. Requires Microsoft Virtual Machine Motion with Constant Acceleration Page (16, EAI ) An online simulation of Braking Distance and Reaction Time. The simulation deals with reacting to a changing traffic light.
AeroSpace Corporation Page (24, #6 ) The AeroSpace Corporation has produced this online resource as an education tool on GPS. Learn about navigation and how it is completed with the global positioning systems. Learn how to use GPS in everyday life. Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader for some files. Trimble Technologies - GPS tutorial Page (24, #6 ) This is the Web site for manufacturer Trimble Technologies. It features a Shockwave tutorial discussing the use of GPS in a variety of activities. MagnaWorks Page (24, #6 ) This page from the Web site of MagnaWorks provides an overview of navigation systems,the technology involved, and the pros and cons of each. Students will need to extrapolate the relevant information from this site, and combine it with information from other sources to draw a conclusion.
The Southern California Integrated GPS network hosts this site. Although aimed at using GPS to measure changes in the Earth's crust, this site has excellent information on what GPS is and how it works. Macromedia Flash player required. Cockpit Display Systems Page (24, #6 ) A site created by Kaiser Electronics Company. Products include Head Down Display (HDD), Head Up Display (HUD) and Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) systems. Provide overviews from each of the product. The GPS was developed by the US Dept. of Defense. As such, most display systems are designed for military use. Astrobiology Web Page (42, #8 ) Astrobiology.com provides this fairly exhaustive site on the different aspects of astrobiology including the requirements for space suits. Contains compiled and pertinent links to sites with extensive information on spacesuits. Includes links to primary NASA resources.
This is an excellent NASA Web site with information about the design of various space suits and their uses. Includes information on the latest models of spacesuit, the inner workings of spacesuits, the Primary life support system, maneuvering in space and the history of spacesuits. MadSci Network:Physics Page (42, #8 ) An excerpt from a MadSci Network newsgroup. A NASA Lewis Research Center researcher replies to a question posted by someone regarding how astronaut suits work. Very informative, secondary source of information. Space Suits Page (42, #8 ) Photo gallery of NASA space suits available in a traveling exhibit. Clicking on each mode brings up a larger image and a description of what the suit's specifications are and why/how it was used. Browse Supercar Search Engine Page (51, #28 ) This page is part of the Supercars.net Web site and lists 50 sports cars with the fastest accelerations from 0-60 mph. The student can choose any number of them to calculate the cars' accelerations in m/s/s.
The official Dragbike Magazine Web site. Contains race results of super sport, drag and other motorcycle race classes. Includes times, distances; ideal for calculating velocities and average accelerations. Sports Illustrated: Maurice Green Page (51, #28 ) Sports Illustrated's article on Maurice Greene. Includes various record times for different runners of the 100-meter men's race. Guinness Book of World Records Sports Page Page (51, #28 ) The Guinness Book of World Records Sports page gives access to world records set in a variety of sporting events. The tab menu at the top of the page gives access to other events which may have speed records listed.
