Explore an Issue: Government Spending on New Technologies (p. 401)
Should public funding be spent on scientific research involving
gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields to develop new technologies?
In a group, choose a new technology that uses gravitational, electric,
or magnetic fields, and discuss the social and economic impact on our
society. Discuss the benefits and drawbacks both of this new technology
and the spending of public funds on research.
2002
Government of Ontario Budget
This site describes how the Ontario government spends tax money. Here
you will find information on how much it spends on scientific research.
Budget
Information
This looks at spending over the years in Canada. You will need to dig
a little bit but you will be able to put together a trend in Canadian
spending on scientific research.

Section 8.5 Questions (p. 420)
- An amusement park ride like the one in Figure 15 elevates riders
on a lift, then drops them. The lift and the riders accelerate downward
under the force of gravity. Research the method used to slow them
down safely, and write a short report explaining the physics involved.
Design another ride that uses the same principles.
Learner.org
This site, dedicated to amusement park physics, looks at all different
types of amusement park rides. In particular, check out the link
at the bottom that is for rider safety.
Roller
Coaster Phyics
Great site on the physics used in roller coasters. You must have
the shockwave plug-in.
Roller
Coaster Safety
This site includes a discussion on safety concerns in building a
roller coaster and how the roller coasters work.

Careers
Practice (p. 425)
- Identify several careers that require knowledge about electric,
gravitational, or magnetic fields. Select a career you are interested
in from the list you made or from the careers described above. Imagine
that you have been employed in your chosen career for five years and
that you are applying to work on a new project of interest.
- Describe the project. It should be related to some of the
new things you learned in this unit. Explain how the concepts
from this unit are applied in the project.
- Create a resume listing your credentials and explaining why
you are qualified to work on the project. Include in your resume:
- your educational background: what university degree or
diploma program you graduated with, which educational institute
you attended, post-graduate training (if any)
- your skills
- your duties in previous positions
- your salary expectations

Jobs.net
These sites are major job searching sites for Canada. Look for
careers in the Engineering and Science field. Try to refine your
search to electrical engineering if possible.

- Another name for parallel plates is a capacitor. Capacitors have
different applications in many devices, such as in camera flash attachments,
defibrillators used to return a person's heart to a normal beating
pattern, and underneath the keys if some computer programs. Using
the Internet and other sources, research capacitors. Pick one application
and write a short report on your findings.
Capacitors
University of Guelph tutorial on how capacitors work. There is a
bit of a historical background with lots of diagrams.
Thinkquest.Org
Table of contents for Senior Secondary School electronics. A good
resource for all electronics. Look particularly at capacitance and
dielectics.
Sweethaven
on-line Interactive Tutor: Capacitance
This site gives a good outline as to what knowledge you need before
you use the page and what you should know when you are done. A very
good site.
- A degausser is a device that is used to demagnetizer permanently
magnetized materials. Using the Internet and other sources, investigate
how these devices work. Prepare a short oral presentation on your
findings.
Verity
Systems
A company that sells Degaussers. The frequently asked questions
section focuses on what degaussers are and how they work.
- Birds use the magnetic field of Earth to navigate over long distances.
Using the Internet and other sources, investigate this application
or nay other way that animals use magnetism, and write a short report
on the current research.
Nationalgeographic.com
A paper that looks at the different factors that allow birds to
migrate effectively and efficiently.
The
Magnetic Sense of Animals
This site discuss how birds and other animals use Earth's magnetic
field for migration and orientation.
Animal
Sense
A site that looks at animal senses that are different from the five
human senses. It discusses sensitivity to magnetic fields as well
as echolocation, electric fields, and others.
