Web LinksUNIT 2: GENETIC CONTINUITYChapter 4: Genes & Heredity
4.5 Incomplete Dominance and Codominance
This pamphlet from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops details both the positive and negative aspects of genetic screening from the point of view of the Catholic church. Engineering the Human Germline Page (146, #4 ) David Heaf of the International Forum on Genetic Engineering compiled this site. It lists the pros and cons of the debate in a tabular form and summarizes the main points of contention from various social, philosophical and religious standpoints. 4.6 Dihybrid Crosses Transgenic organisms in aquaculture Page (156, #4 ) A review of the environmental risks of transgenic organisms in aquaculture. This site is operated by Information Systems for Biotechnology. The report is a comprehensive review of the questions that remain to be addressed when considering the use of genetically modified organisms in natural environments. David Suzuki Foundation: The Importance of Biodiversity Page (156, #4 ) Prepared by the David Suzuki Foundation, this article discusses the importance of biodiversity as it relates to maintaining a stable environment. Drosphila Virtual Library Page (156, TTA ) An introduction to drosophila biology from the Drosphila virtual Library. This Web site reviews the important developmental and physiological properties of this organism The Virtual Fly Lab Page (156, TTA ) This site allows users to select specific fly characteristics and cross them in a virtual environment. Offspring results are computer generated and tabulated for further investigation. IMPORTANT: Please be aware that the Virtual Fly lab is now available for subscription through Biology Labs Online. When the Nelson Biology 11 was being developed, the Virtual Fly lab was available for free. Due to increased traffic and administrative overhead, the Virtual Fly lab charges a fee for its use. Please read about the Virtual Fly lab here. There is a FREE one-day trial of the Virtual Fly lab available at the Biology Labs Online site. If students follow the directions, the one-day trial should be enough to complete the activity on page 156. To access additional information and register for the one-day trial, please click here. The Interactive Fly Page (156, TTA ) The Society for Developmental Biology and Flybase have combined their efforts in compiling this comprehensive Web site on the characteristics of the common fruit fly. The site includes information on genes active at different stages during fly development, chromosome maps, details on functionality of genes etc. Flybase Page (156, TTA ) Flybase maintains this site which contains the latest information about the genome of Drosophila. The site includes gene maps, gene sequences, fly stock cultures and their sources etc. Flyview: A Drosphila Image Database Page (156, TTA ) An image database of variations in fruit flies that span all stages of Fruit Fly development. The site is maintained by Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Invasive Species Page (156, #4 ) Administered by the USDA, this site discusses the issues related to the introduction of non-endemic species into an environment. The context is US in focus but has applications in Canada. Chapter 4 Review Sid Altman: Molecular Biologist Page (159, #19 ) Found on the Great Canadian Scientists Web site, this page describes how Altman contributed to molecular biology by discovering a biochemical process that used RNA as the active part of an enzyme. Part of Watson and Crick's team. Walter and Memory Lewis Page (159, #19 ) Found on the Great Canadian Scientist Web site, this page describes a husband and wife team who have contributed to a greater understanding of the importance of rain forests as a source of important pharmaceutical chemicals. Great Canadian Scientists Long List Page (159, #19 ) Listing of Canadian Scientists and their contributions to all fields in scientific study. The site is called "Great Canadian Scientists" and is hosted by science.ca. Michael Smith: Biochemist, Molecular Biologist Page (159, #19 ) Found in the GCS Web site, this page describes the contributions of Michael Smith in the development of techniques to alter DNA in a very specific and directed way. Breeding a Better Bean: The Horizontal Resistance Approach Page (159, #19 ) International Development Research Centre and its teams have contributed to the development of a variety of crops around the world. These crops have been designed to help resist various environmental conditions and increase yields in the countries involved. International Research Development Centre Page (159, #19 ) International Development Research Centre and its teams have contributed to the development of a variety of crops around the world. These crops have been designed to help resist various environmental conditions and increase yields in the countries involved. |
