2.1 Nutrients In this activity, you will view and manipulate computer-generated, three-dimensional molecular models of various biochemicals, the chemicals of living matter. You will also compare the different nutrient molecules. IMPORTANT: Before you begin this activity, you must download and install CHIME. This program is free, but requires that you register. You can do this by visiting the site linked below and clicking the "Register" button. Make sure that you download and install the most recent version of CHIME. If you have previously downloaded the CHIME plug-in and are now having trouble viewing molecules, please revisit the MDL site to download the latest version. CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE MDL SITE TO REGISTER AND DOWNLOAD CHIME 1. To access the Molecules of Life program, click on the link above or click here. 2. Read the Molecules of Life--Introduction, which describes the software and the mouse actions that allow you to view and manipulate the computer-generated images of molecules. When you have finished reading the instructions, click on the name of one of the molecules on the left side of the screen to begin exploring molecules. 3. Complete the instructions in the Student Text. 2.3 Lipids Sugar and Fat Substitutes Page (40, #4 ) This article from Something-Fishy.org details the dangers of three sugar substitutes--saccharine, aspartame, and sucralose--and one fat substitute--olestra. Artificial Sweetners - University of Massachusetts Page (40, #4 ) From the University of Massachusetts Web site, this short article describes the advantages and disadvantages of artificial sweeteners. It explains the effects of many of the different types sweeteners, and briefly discusses artificial sweeteners in association with weight loss. 2.9 Energy Flow in Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Employment in Microbiology Page (61, #6 ) This page has links to jobs related to microbiology. Prerequisites, job duties and experience required can be seen. Biology Links/Biology Jobs Page (61, #6 ) Links to many Biology job sites. Students can search for jobs on genetics, microbiology or any other branch of biology related to cellular functions. 2.11 Types of Respiration Global Warming: Focus on the Future Page (68, EAI ) From Enviroweb, this article describes why global warming is happening and how humans have caused the present day air pollution. It uses a photo diary approach coupled with interactive icons that lead to more detailed information The Hidden Cost of Fossil Fuel Page (68, EAI ) From the Union of Concerned Scientists, this article discusses the harmful effects to both humans and the environment that result from fossil fuel emission. The Coming Climate Page (68, EAI ) This reproduction of a Scientific America Feature Article giving a broad overview of the health consequences that result from fossil fuel emissions. It also compares the pollution of air at present to the air pollution decades back. |
