Professional Development Opportunities
Nelson Education is committed to providing support to teachers implementing
Ontario's new Science curriculum. Nelson Education has an inservice team
of teacher workshop leaders led by full-time, seconded science educators.
Since September 1999, Nelson Education has led over 50 workshops to help
the over 500 schools using Nelson Science 9 to implement the
new curriculum and resources.
The Nelson Education Inservice Workshop model is typically a three-phase
process:
PHASE 1:
Initial
Implementation Workshop |
PHASE 2:
Assessment and Evaluation Workshop |
PHASE 3:
Customized Workshops |
| This workshop focuses on a general overview of the
curriculum and the instructional design of the Nelson Science
9 student and teacher resources. A hands-on activity from the
student text is always part of the workshop. |
This workshop helps teachers with planning using the
assessment tools in the Teacher's Resource binders (including the
Curriculum and Assessment Planning Chart, rubrics, checklists and
self-assessment tools). The goal of this workshop is to assist teachers
with maintaining a balance of instruction and assessment reflecting
the Ontario Science Achievement Chart categories. |
Through consultation with Science Consultants, Subject
Area Chairs or Department Heads, Nelson Education delivers customized
workshops that reflect the specific needs of schools and school
boards. Topics for customized workshops might include: Teaching
the Grade 9 Space Unit; Evaluation and the Report Card; Using Laboratory
Technology in the Classroom; and Implementing the Applied Course.
