What Can We See in the Sky?
Astronomy Picture of the Day

Astronomical Sky Calendar.  Type in the year, start month, end month, observatory, west longitude, north latitude, site name, standard time zone, time zone name, hours, and get a sky calendar.

Approximate astronomical positions.  A simple way to find which planets you can see with a transit times chart.

Night Sky

Using a Naked-Eye Sky Map.  Lots of people buy a telescope only to discover that they can't find much of anything with it in the sky. This page contains an article that teaches you how to identify stars as seen with the naked eye.

Astronomy's Problem with Light Pollution.  A good backgrounder on Light Pollution and how it threatens astronomers.

The Nine Planets.  A large reference of data on the planets, their moons, asteroids, meteors, spacecraft, and a glossary. Has Quicktime movies, AVI movies, pictures, and music for seven of the planets from Holst's composition, The Planets.

An Overview of the Solar System.  This site contains excellent images of planets, comets, asteroids, and meteors.

Maps of the Solar System.  A solar system surface map database, where you can download maps, or just look at the surface features.

Solar System Live by John Walker.  You can see where the planets will be at any time using this page. If you know a lot about astronomy already, this can be a useful tool.

A very informative site by explorezone.com. The home page is set up like a newspaper with current astronomical events along with dozens of links to other areas of this content-rich site.

Windows to the Universe.  An amazing site from the University of Michigan. Excellent graphics.

Comets.  At this site you will find information about comets. Find information on how they are formed, what they are made of, how big they can be, and more.

Bill Bottke's Asteroid Research Home Page.
This site contains information about asteroid research, pictures of asteroids, science questions about asteroids, photos of impact crater, and more.
