Song (traditional poem translated by W.E. Calvert)

  • Sea Kayaking Information

Ice Hunter (glass sculpture by James Houston, page 10)
  • James Houston
Students can visit the National Library of Canada's Web site for information on this artist, sculptor, and author.
Lineage (poem by Margaret Walker)
  • Margaret Walker
This site includes an archive of Margaret Walker's poetry, a bibliography, and biography. Plus, there is an insightful question and answer link to her work. Before they read the biography on this site, students can locate and read the poems "I Want to Write" and "Sorrow Home." They can then write a paragraph describing who they think Margaret Walker is and where she is from based on these two poems. Read the biography together and discuss how accurate their paragraphs were.
Cane Cutters (painting by Mario Carreno, page 12)
  • Mario Carreno
Check this site for a brief profile of Mario Carreno, the artist who created the visual that accompanies "Lineage." Students will need to scroll through the other profiles to find the profile on Carreno. Ask them to consider the following statement from the site in light of the example of Carreno's work in Passages 11: "His earliest work focused on exotic Caribbean themes that became increasingly geometric in style during the 1950s."
One Mile of Ice (survival story by Hugh Garner)
  • Hugh Garner
This site offers students a brief insight into the author of "One Mile of Ice." After students have read the information on this site, discuss as a class the characters and adventure Garner created in "One Mile of Ice," and Garner's own character.
  • Surviving Hypothermia
Students can find out more about hypothermia at this winter camping site. Invite students to read one of the articles archived at this site, and report back to the class on its subject.
Village Laurentien (painting by Clarence Gagnon, page 16)
  • Gagnon Painting 1 , Gagnon Painting 2
Have the students visit the two Web pages above to see other examples of Gagnon's work. Discuss how these paintings have a similar style to the one in the story. The above pages are part of a much larger art archive at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Web site. Students could access other Canadian artists represented in the Virtual Exhibition of this Web site and locate an image that they think represents the story. For example, "Sleigh Race Across the Ice," by Cornelius Krieghoff.
Mattie Sure Shot (Photo Essay by Mattie Gunterman)
  • History of Photography
This site is a reference site with many links to relevant sites about the history of photography.
  • Photo Exhibitions
At this site students can examine a number of the photos from past exhibitions. They can compare these photos with Mattie Gunterman's photo essay. How are the photos and the images they capture similar or different? How has photography changed in the past 100 years?
