UNIT 8: OUT IN THE WORLD

Assignment 1

Many young people are unaware of what it takes to be on one’s own, financially speaking. Why not take a quick Reality Check to determine if you will be able to afford a desirable lifestyle once you are on your own?

Complete the checklist online. If you are uncertain as to how to respond, do the best you can. Remember, this site was designed for Americans and not specifically for Canadians.

Submit your responses online. Based on what you checked off, you will be provided with an estimation of how much money you will have to earn, the kinds of jobs that fit into that pay scale and the level of education needed to acquire that particular pay scale.

In a brief paragraph, summarize the extent to which completing this form served as a reality check. Did you, in other words, know how much it costs to maintain a particular lifestyle?

Assignment 2

Do you like taking self-assessment quizzes? Sometimes they can be a lot of fun and very enlightening. Visit and explore the Monster.ca Self-assessment Center. Here you will find a variety of quizzes that you can complete online.

Upon submission of your responses, you will not only receive an analysis of your answers but also advice and links that should help you find and keep the job you really want.

After you have completed at least three of the self-assessment quizzes from any category, record your thoughts and observations in a series of reflective sentences.

Assignment 3

Your first truly major purchase will likely be buying a car. This is not something you do quickly and without preparation. Identify five major points made in this article which deal with what is involved in the decision of buying a car.

You should also determine what car you can afford. This online resource should help you to do this. To complete the calculation, you need to consider how much you are willing to put down and pay each month. Nowadays, interest rates are extremely low (if not zero per cent). Once you have entered your information, click the “results” key and find out how much your car will cost you.

Were you surprised with the results? Write a summary of your findings and reactions.
