CHAPTER 10: SPEAKING AND LISTENING

Effective Public Speaking

  1. Read some tips on public speaking at School for Champions: Achieving your speaking goals. What advice did you find the most useful? Take the quiz at the bottom of the web page to test your comprehension of the material provided.

  2. Explore the contents of this monthly list of tips for speakers from LJL Seminars. Choose any two to read carefully. For each entry, write a brief summary of what you have learned about public speaking.

Effective Listening

  1. Listen to one or more of the speeches provided in the History Channel's Archive of Speeches. Click the "Speech Archive" button for the full index. What did you find effective about the speech(es)you listened to? Note: You will need RealAudio to listen to these speeches. A download link is provided on the History Channel site.

  2. In groups, explore and discuss the advice on effective note-taking provided at the Dartmouth Board of Education Web site. Create a series of posters featuring what you consider to be the most valuable advice offered in this tutorial.

Effective Group Work

  1. Rewrite Anne E. Brown's " 10 guidelines for doing group work in mathematics" so that they apply to an English Language Arts classroom. Do not hesitate to adapt the list wherever you feel it is necessary.

The ability to assess the contributions of others during group work is an important skill to develop. In groups, use a peer assessment framework as the basis for the creation of your own assessment framework. Use the new framework the next time you are involved in group work.
