Unit 4: Family Law
CHAPTER 15: DIVISION OF FAMILY PROPERTY AND SPOUSAL SUPPORT
E-ACTIVITY: PROVINCIAL OR TERRITORIAL PROCEDURES FOR ENFORCING CHILD
SUPPORT PAYMENTS (p. 474)
Activity: Create a Pamphlet on Child Support Enforcement Measures
Usually when couples with children divorce, some amount of child support
is required. However, sometimes the parent paying child support misses
or stops payments. In your province or territory, what means are there
to enforce payment of child support?
Prepare a pamphlet detailing the procedures for enforcing child support
payments in your jurisdiction.
- Visit the Department
of Justice for Canada Web site to research the enforcement program
for your jurisdiction
- Create a pamphlet for interested parents in your jurisdiction. In
the pamphlet, include the answers to the following questions:
- What government office is responsible for enforcing support orders
in your jurisdiction? What is the office's mandate?
- How does the enforcement program work in your jurisdiction?
- What can the receiving parent do if payments are stopped or
missed? What procedures are then followed?
- What should the paying parent do if he or she falls behind in
the required payments?
Also in your pamphlet, include the necessary contact information (including
Web site) for the relevant government office.
