E-ACTIVITY: LAW COMMISSION OF CANADA’S INSTITUTIONAL CHILD ABUSE REPORT (p. 446)

Activity: Investigate the Law Commission of Canada’s Report on Institutional Child Abuse

In the year 2000, Parliament received the Law Commission of Canada’s report titled “Restoring Dignity—Responding to Child Abuse in Canadian Institutions.” Why was this report commissioned? How did it respond to the needs of survivors?

To answer these questions, research the Law Commission’s report on institutional child abuse, fill in an investigation sheet about it, and comment upon it.

  1. Visit the Law Commission of Canada’s Web site and complete the following investigation sheet. Click here if you would like to download the investigation chart.

At the Web site, select “About this Project” and answer the following 6 questions:

6. What was the research focus for the 4 key papers?

 
Select the March 23, 2000, news release and answer the following 3 questions:

8. In addition to compensation, what other services were suggested?

 
9. What caution about the past was issued?

 
Download the Executive Summary of the Report as a pdf file and answer the following question:
