Activity: Chart and Consider Statistics on the Canadian Family

Overall, the composition of Canadian families is changing. Compared with the past, proportionally fewer families can be classified as traditional nuclear families. What significant characteristics and trends can you see? Investigate statistics and consider your findings.

  1. Visit the Statistics Canada Web site for statistics on the Canadian family. To complete the chart below, examine the Web sites’ statistical charts for
    • the number of families and their average size

    • number of persons in families by family size

    • persons in families and persons not in families—for Canada and for your province or territory

    • family structure—for your province or territory
