Activity: Prepare an Oral Presentation About the Youth Criminal
Justice Act
The Youth Criminal Justice Act passed in February of 2002. It
is designed to make changes in the youth criminal justice system and to
improve on its predecessor, the Young Offenders Act.
Assume that you are a communications officer employed by the federal
government. Your latest assignment is to give a series of talks to educate
teenagers about the new laws related to youth justice. How does the new
act build on the old one? What are the changes in the new legislation?
How are they designed to benefit the system? In this activity, you will
begin your task by producing and giving a brief oral presentation about
just one aspect of the changes to the youth justice system.
- Visit the Web site of the Department
of Justice for Canada. Prepare an oral presentation that highlights
a specific aspect of the new legislation. Select one of the following
categories for the focus of your talk.
- The basic principles upon which strategies were formed to renew
the youth justice system and the main features of the new approach.
- Improvements to the youth justice system
- Key elements under the preamble and declaration of principle
- The new approach to sentencing
- The new approach to publication and records
- The new approach to custody and reintegration into the community
- The changes to the formal court procedure
- Changes to measure outside the formal court process
