Activity: Complete an Organizer of Organizations That Support Victims of Crimes

Not only can victims suffer at the hands of a criminal offender, but also they may feel further victimization as they progress through the criminal justice system. There are organizations that offer support to victims in order to help them through the often intimidating process.

In this activity, you will find out more about organizations that support victims of crimes and complete an organizer to summarize your research information.

1. Visit the following Web sites of organizations that support victims of crimes and complete an organizer similar to the one below.
   • MADD Canada
   • The Criminal Injury Compensation Program of British Columbia
   • The National Justice Network
   • The National Parole Board
     

2. Review the support programs offered by MADD Canada. With a partner, select one of the programs and prepare a brief oral presentation on the program and how it helps victims’ rights.
3. To further extend your research on victims’ rights, access an example of legislation that supports victims of crime. Briefly summarize in your notes the types of rights that are afforded victims of crimes.

   • In Nova Scotia, see the Victims’ Rights and Services Act, 1989, c. 14, s. 1.
