Activity: Jigsaw Organizer of Support Organizations

Various nonprofit organizations offer assistance to individuals caught up in the criminal justice system, most of whom are individuals convicted of crimes. The organizations aid them at various stages of the criminal justice process. Some organizations may help individuals going through the court process, while others may offer assistance to offenders serving their sentence. Some organizations get involved after offenders have been released from custody, in the hopes of helping them adjust to life outside prison and become law-abiding citizens.

Find out more about the support organizations that help people involved in the criminal justice system by completing the following jigsaw activity. Your goal will be to complete an organizer to summarize your research information.

1. Form home groups of four students. Each student takes responsibility for researching one of the following four organizations that offer support to criminal offenders.

• The Elizabeth Fry Society


• The Salvation Army

2. Break off into expert groups to join with other students researching the same organization. Research the nature of the particular organization for which you are responsible. You'll find the information you need by visiting one of the following Web sites:
