E-ACTIVITY: LAW REFORM AND THE LAW COMMISSION OF CANADA (p. 105)
Activity: Make a Tree Diagram of the Current Work of the Law Commission
of Canada
Explore the Law Commission of Canada to discover more about law reform
and the work of this independent federal agency. In this activity, you
will make a tree diagram to help you visualize the structure of the Law
Commission's work.
- Visit the Law
Commission of Canada Web site and discover the issues and projects
of current focus. See what issues are being highlighted in order
to improve and modernize Canadian laws.
Then take the following steps to create a tree diagram to illustrate
the work of the Law Commission.
- Identify the purpose of the Law Commission. Write this at the
bottom of a large sheet of paper.
- Identify the four themes around which the Law Commission structures
its work. Write these above the purpose, as the main branches of
your tree.
- Describe the type of research project that the commission focuses
on under each theme, and write these as extensions of your four
theme branches.
- Identify the specific research projects that the commission is
focusing on under each theme, and write these as smaller branches
extending from your extended theme branches.
- Explain how you as a citizen can participate in the consultative
process.
- Select one of the following research topics and summarize the issues
the Law Commission is reviewing in this area:
- Close Personal Relationships Between Adults. See the summary
of discussion points at the end of the "Executive Summary" to
discover the issues at stake in this area.
- From Restorative Justice to Transformative Justice. See
the "Questions for Discussion" to identify the main issues
in this area.
- Institutional Abuse of Children. See the "Issues" section
in the "Executive Summary" to identify the central issues.
