E-ACTIVITY: THE ASSEMBLY OF FIRST NATIONS (p. 76)
Activity: Make a Poster to Highlight First Nations Issues
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is the national lobby organization
of the First Nations in Canada. The AFN represents the interests of
the more than 630 First Nations communities that exist in Canada. In
this activity you will prepare a poster to educate the general public
about the AFN and the issues important to the First Nations peoples.
LEGAL INQUIRY MODEL
Focus on an issue of concern to the First Nation communities.
Formulate questions such as Who? What? When? Where? and Why? to guide
your initial research.
Identify Your Source: In this case, record the Web site address
and corresponding links.
Formulate a question to guide your research,
whether opinion, argument, or thesis.
Research: Use the Assembly of First Nations
Web site to conduct your research. Look for different points of view;
determine the relevance and reliability of the information; and evaluate
the credibility of your sources by looking for bias, accuracy, and
underlying assumptions.
Organize: Classify and clarify information that
you have selected; look for logical connections in the material; and
use charts, graphic organizers, and other organizational aids.
Answer: Synthesize and evaluate your findings;
formulate an opinion, argument, or thesis that succinctly answers your
questions; and determine the evidence and supporting material you will
use to answer your questions.
Communicate your findings. Identify your research
purpose and the intended audience, and prepare a poster to communicate
your findings.
