Activity: Report on pay equity and employment equity

The terms "pay equity" and "employment equity" are often used when discussing women's issues related to employment law. While the term "equity" generally means "fairness," how can people make sure that equity is being achieved? Pay equity and employment equity involve different aspects of the law.

  1. Visit the Canadian Human Rights Commission Web site and read the process for filing a pay equity complaint in a federally regulated workplace.

    Find answers to the following questions:
    • What does section 11 of the Canadian Human Rights Act guarantee?
    • What is the meaning of "equal pay for work of equal value"?
    • Who is covered by federal pay equity legislation?
    • What steps should you take prior to filing a complaint under the Canadian Human Rights Commission?
    • What happens to your complaint?
    • What four criteria are used to evaluate a job?
    • What options do the commissioners have?
    • Is an employee protected from employer retaliation?

  2. Visit the Human Resources Development Canada Workplace Equity Web site and select "Employment Equity in Canada Progress,1987-2000."

    Answer the following questions about employment equity:
    • When did the first Employment Equity Act come into force in Canada?
    • What is the purpose of the Employment Equity Act?
    • Identify the four designated groups under the current Employment Equity Act.
    • How many employees are covered?
    • What are some statistics regarding the success of employment equity programs in Canada?
    • Which one of the targeted groups enjoyed the fastest growth in the time period indicated?
    • Which group enjoyed the least growth?

  3. Write a report on the difference between pay equity and employment equity in a federally regulated workplace.
