Student Text Features
Entrepreneurship: Creating a Venture, Second Edition offers
instructional strategies and learning opportunities that focus on the
expectations of the Grade 11 College, Grade 11 Open, and the Grade 12
College guidelines of the Ontario curriculum. The text addresses the common
expectations from the three programs and there are two accompanying student
workbooks that address the in-depth study of each of the programs.
KEY FEATURES
The following elements appear in each chapter of the text:
• Unit Opener: This will be a story that encompasses
the key elements in the unit and providing students with something to
connect with and reflect on as they learn.
• Unit Overview: This describes the key expectations
addresses in the unit in a student centred language.
• Learning Opportunities: This outlines what will be
presented in the chapter and what students are expected to know at the
end.
• Entrepreneurial Language: This will list key words
and phrases introduced in the chapter that are specific to entrepreneurship
and new to students either in context or form.
• Venture Profiles: These will be short case studies
of entrepreneurs from a variety of segments. There will be 3-5 profiles
per chapter with photos of the entrepreneur or product.
• Exploring will appear immediately following each venture
profile and will be a tool to debrief the profile and apply key learning
from the chapter.
• Agents of Change will be short anecdotes (50 words)
about people who have demonstrated entrepreneurship/enterprising skills
and made a difference. There will be 2-3 per chapter and they will appear
in the margin.
• Quotes extracted from the text will be bolded in the
margin with Entrepreneurial Language highlighted in a different colour.

• Graphics illustrating key points will be included.
There will be 6-8 per chapter.
• Worth Repeating will be quotes from an external source
relevant to the text and appear in the margins.
• Your Turn: Questions that address concept understanding,
skill application and knowledge connections will appear throughout the
chapter. They are designed to extend learning.
• International News: There will be two short (50 words)
pieces per chapter. They are small bits of information relating to the
global economy.
• E-Bits & Bytes: There will be two per chapter.
They contain information related to the New Economy.
• Cool Stuff: Information not directly linked to text
information but good to know.
• End of Chapter Activities:
– Flashbacks - chapter review
summary
– Lessons Learned - review questions
– Venturing Out - activities
involving cooperative groups,
research, community,
venture planning
– Point of View - students are
presented with a scenario, they
are asked to reflect
and write a response in their entrepreneurial
journal.
• Unit Review: Highlights in quick glance format the
key learning from the unit and how they flow
together.
• The Venture Wheel will be utilized throughout the
text. It will appear in full colour, colour-coded to the chapter that
covers that section and highlight each one as it appears and when it is
completed.

Readability
The student text is organized into three units with 3-5 chapters per
unit. Consistent column width and use of margin space throughout the text
make it easy to read. Visuals are used to enhance understanding.
Entrepreneurial language is colour coded when it appears in the chapter,
is listed at the beginning of the chapter in the "Entrepreneurial
Language" box and defined in the Entrepreneurial Language Glossary.
Chunking of text - content will be provided in many discrete blocks of
text, which makes the reading task more manageable.
