Canadian Heirloom Allegiance Series

"Allegiance: The Ontario Story" (volume III of the Heirloom series on this Web site) celebrates people-from the native people who lived in the area for thousands of years through to the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have come to the land we now called Ontario. This site tells the story for everyone who has become part of the history of this province.

Population of Canada

Statistics Canada provides numerical information about the population of Canada and its provinces. At this Web site can find out about how the total population is changing in each province and territory and the origin of Canada citizens.




Web Activity

?_Geography Who Are Ontario's People?

In this activity you will create a chart to show the changes in Ontario's immigrant population by place of birth.

1. Go to the Statistics Canada Web site.    

2. Choose "English" or "Francais". Then, from the menu bar across the top,

    select "Canadian Statistics".

3. Click on population . Then select "Other Characteristics" from the bottom

    of the list.

4. From the list of available links, click on "immigrant population by place of

    birth and period of immigration, 2001 census, provinces and territories ".

   Be Careful!! Read carefully to be sure you select the right link!

   Complete the 2001 column in the table below using information from the

   chart. Click here to download a copy of the table.

5. When you have gathered the 2001 information, select 1996 in the box at

    the top of the chart that says "click here to select a census year" . Record

    the information for 1996.

6. Answer the following questions based on your table and the Web site you

    got the information from:

a) Define the term "immigrant population".

b) From which continent did Ontario's immigrant

    population decrease from 1996 to 2001?

c) What part of that continent showed a decrease

    in Ontario's immigrant population?

d) What countries would that part include?

e) Which continent did the biggest growth come


f) What was the total growth in Ontario's

    immigrant population from 1996 to 2001?

g) What general statement can you make about

    Ontario's immigrant population based on this
