Web Links

Ekati Diamond Mine

Diamond mining represents a growing opportunity for the Northwest Territories. Tour Canada's first operating diamond mine-using Satellite imagery! This Natural Resources Canada Web site shows seven satellite images of the Ekati Diamond Mine, 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife. Check out the Panda Pit, the main camp and the processing camp, the waste rock storage area, and even the airstrip. Teachers can use this Web site to introduce students to the capabilities of satellite imagery, and/or to supplement the information on development of industries in the student text.

NWT Species at Risk

This Web site listing NWT species at risk presents an opportunity to draw students' attention to the impact of human population on species: compared to other, more populous parts of Canada, NWT has few species at risk or threatened. Before completing the activity, discuss with students what COSEWIC is, (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada) and assist with definitions. Note that once you have selected the species, by clicking on the term at the top of that page (endangered, of concern, etc.), you can bring up a Web page of definitions.

If desired, use this activity to work with students on their note-taking skills. The articles on each species are well organized, but contain extensive information, and may include vocabulary that is not familiar to some students.
