Lighthouses of Nova Scotia

As students view photos and explore the history of the Nova Scotia lighthouses featured on the site, ask them to consider why it's important to preserve the lighthouses. Is it just because they are a popular attraction for tourists, or might there be other reasons? This could lead to a wider discussion of the value of preserving historic buildings. You may wish to have them consider the value of the historic buildings in their community.

Explore Nova Scotia

Students can explore this Nova Scotia tourism Web site to practise obtaining information from Internet sources. You could use this site to discuss common features of Web pages, such as navigation bars, site search capabilities, and hypertext links. This will help students to develop their Internet research skills, especially if they do not have access to the Internet at home.

The focus of this activity is on the process of searching Web sites for information. Discuss with students whether or not they found the site easy to navigate, and whether they encountered any other difficulties. If necessary, clarify common Web site terminology, such as "home," "sitemap," "FAQs" and "links."

Student paragraphs in response to question 4 might contain reasons related to the wide variety of different kinds of outdoor activity, the large number of historical sites, the beauty of the landscape, and the number of sites/activities that appeal to visitors with different interests.
