As students work through the activity, you may wish have them pause after step three to discuss any difficulties they are having and share the strategies they are using. Useful strategies include:

• starting by rereading the section and then, without referring to the document, listing some main ideas that come to mind
• combining two or three specific statements into one general statement
• printing the first section of the document (or you may wish to provide a printed version) and underlining more important information and crossing out less important information

Use or adapt the following criteria to evaluate the students' final summaries:

• the summary shows evidence that the student can identify main ideas
• less important information has been omitted
• information is stated in the student's own words
• the summary is well organized and coherent
