Folk Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador

This Web page provides words and music to popular folk songs from Newfoundland and Labrador. Have students read some of the lyrics (and perhaps sing some of the songs) to see what how folk songs can be a valuable source of information about the people who first sang them.

The Mummering Tradition

On this Web page students can learn about the traditional custom of mummering-from its roots in ancient Rome to its present form in rural Newfoundland and Labrador, where the custom lives on. The information illustrates how the province's culture was influenced by British and Irish settlers.

For paragraphs completed in step 4 of the student activity, students should include details that would make the custom clear to someone who is not familiar with it. For example, a paragraph about birthday parties might include the following information:

  • held on the anniversary of the day the person was born
  • people are invited to a party
  • people bring cards and gifts for the person whose birthday it is
  • the meal ends with a cake with lit candles on top
  • people sing a song called "Happy Birthday"
  • the person whose birthday it is makes a wish before blowing out the candles
