| 5 Ws and How |
This site provides a wealth of information about the Hopewell Rocks and the Bay of Fundy. Included on the site are links related to the Fundy tides, the formation of the Hopewell Rocks, Mi'kmaq legends related to the bay, and many other topics. Students can use the site to extend information in the student book and to explore topics of personal interest.
Whale watching in the Bay of Fundy is a popular tourist activity. Students can find out how whales have been making the news by visiting this Web page, which provides links to news articles about whales in the region. Many of the articles are drawn from the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. Students can use the site to practise extracting main ideas from news articles.
| 5 Ws and How |
The "5 Ws and How" chart requires students to select main ideas and omit less important details. When evaluating the charts, look for evidence that a student is having difficulty omitting less important information, or has trouble identifying the main ideas. To provide support for these students, you may wish to work with them in a small group and cooperatively repeat the charting activity using another article from the site.
Use or adapt the following criteria to evaluate the students' oral summaries:
the content of the oral summary shows that the
student is able to discriminate more important
information from less important information
the student has organized the information in a logical
manner
