This .pdf document, available from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, explains what totem poles are. The document is written for kids, and includes illustrations. Once they understand what totem poles are and what they're for, kids are encouraged to design their own to represent their own family and history.
The statistical profiles of Canadian communities provide 2001 Census data for close to 6,000 communities, 288 counties (or their equivalents), 27 large, and 113 smaller metropolitan areas. Data is provided for a wide range of topics, including population, education, income and work, and families and dwellings. This activity provides an introduction for students to the Statistics Canada Web site.
