Lesson 1 - Area of a Parallelogram

Use the following interactive games and activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about the area of a parallelogram. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Goal

Develop and apply the formula for the area of a parallelogram.

Builds Upon

Student Book pages 152-155

Instructions for Use

Area of a Parallelogram allows students to see how rectangles are related to parallelograms. Knowing this fact, students can find the area of a parallelogram.

To use Area of a Parallelogram, select "Parallelogram" under "Shape". Click the "Animate" button to watch a parallelogram change into a rectangle.

To find the area of the rectangle, click on two boxes beside "Click to measure lengths" located below the work area. Two interactive lines appear. Grab one line to measure the length of the rectangle and the other to measure the height of the rectangle. Click on "Show base and height" to check your work. Then click on "Show grid" to see how many grid squares fall inside the rectangle. The grid squares represent the area of the rectangle, which is also the area of the parallelogram. Click on "Show area" to check your answer.

For extra practice, students can also try the Assessment Questions below the work area.

Perimeter and Area of a Parallelogram helps students understand the formula for the area of a parallelogram.

To use Perimeter and Area of a Parallelogram, drag the pink dots to change the dimensions of the parallelogram. Notice the changes in the perimeter and area as the dimensions change.

Calculating the Area of a Parallelogram helps students practice multiplying base by height to find the area of a parallelogram.

To use Calculating the Area of a Parallelogram, click the "Start" button. Input the area of the parallelogram based on the base and height measurements given. Click the "check" button to check your answer.
