Lesson 5 - Powers
Use the following interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about powers. Students can do these activities on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use
Powers Practice is a demonstration that shows powers are repeated multiplication of the same factor.
To use Powers Practice, click the "Introduction" button to watch the animation. Be sure to click the play button.
Click the "Components" button and move the sliders to see how to read powers.
Click the "Forms" button and move the base and exponent sliders to see the change in exponential, repeated multiplication, and standard forms.
As an extension exercise, click the "Power Practice" button to calculate powers. Click the "New Problem" button and input the answer in the text box. An interactive power calculator will help students answer the questions. Some of the questions are too difficult for Grade 7 students, such as negative numbers and exponents. Students can keep clicking on the New Problem button to find questions with positive numbers and exponents. Click the "Check/Explain" button to check the answer.
Secret Worlds: The Universe Within let students explore the powers of 10 to understand the relative size of things in our world and universe.
To use Secret Worlds: The Universe Within, let the tutorial download automatically. Each picture is an image of something that is 10 times closer than the preceding image. Watch the meters and micrometers counts. To reverse the process, click the "Auto" button to see the image that is 10 times farther away than the one following it.
