Lesson 8 - Choosing a Method to DivideTo encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Choose a Method to Divide, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs. Builds UponStudent Book pages 290-291 Instructions for UseBase Ten Blocks lets students model breaking the dividend into groups the size of the divisor as a method to divide. To use Base Ten Blocks, click the place value backdrop. Click on a block and drag it into the workspace. Select a block by clicking on it. Once selected, the block can be moved to any location on the workspace. To remove a block, drag it to the recycling bin. Click on the tools on the top panel to select and drag, rotate, lasso blocks to group them, break larger blocks into the next size down, or glue smaller blocks to form the next size up.
Long Division is an animation that lets students observe step-by-step instructions to answer long division questions. Click the 'OK' button and follow the review. To see another example, click the 'Next' button.
Interactive Calculator provides students with a method to divide using a calculator. To use the interactive calculator, start by pressing the number 100. This number will appear in the window of the calculator. Press the ' ÷ ' button on the calculator, the number selected becomes shaded on the hundreds board. Press the number 10, and then the ' =' button on the calculator. Try dividing other numbers with the interactive calculator.
