Lesson 2 - Square Metres

To encourage your child to have fun on the Web while learning about Square Metres, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Wallpaper Calculator prompts your child to estimate area using square metres or feet.

To use Wallpaper Calculator, type the width and height of the room to be wallpapered into the corresponding text boxes. Measure any doors or windows in the room. Click the 'Subtract Door' or 'Subtract Window' buttons for each door or window. Choose either metres or feet. Click the 'Calculate area to paper' button. To start again, press the 'New Calculation' button.

 

The Estimator prompts your child to estimate area using square units.

To use The Estimator, set the problem type to 'Area'. Click 'Hint' to show the grid. In the menu 'Answer must be', choose how close your answer must be to the actual answer. If you choose "Almost perfect," your answer must be within 5% (either above or below) of the actual answer. If you choose "Really close," your answer must be within 10%. If you choose "Close," your answer must be within 15%. Type in the answer and click the ' Check Answer' button to see if it is correct. Try the next question.
