Lesson 4 - Adding 4-Digit Numbers

To encourage your child to have fun on the Web while learning about Adding 4-Digit Numbers, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Stamp Game provides your child practice solving addition problems using regrouping.

To use Stamp Game, click on the '+' sign. You may need to toggle through subtraction and multiplication signs to find the addition sign. Start forming the first number by dragging the stamps onto the work area. Form the second number by dragging the stamps onto the work area underneath the first set of stamps. To regroup, combine the stamps for each category into groups and exchange each group of TEN stamps for ONE of a higher category. When the correct groupings are formed, the answer is shown.

Click 'Clear' to start a new question, and click 'X' to exit the program.

 

Large Bead Frame prompts your child to practice solving addition problems using regrouping.

To use Large Bead Frame, click on the '+' sign. You may need to toggle through subtraction and multiplication signs to find the addition sign. Start forming the first number by sliding the beads across the work area. Form the second number by sliding more beads across the work area beside the first set of beads. To regroup, combine the beads for each category into groups and exchange each group of TEN beads for ONE of a higher category. When the correct groupings are formed, the answer is shown.

Click 'Clear' to start a new question and click 'X' to exit the program.

 

Millennium Bug Race provides your child practice adding 4-digit numbers.

To use Millennium Bug Race, find a partner to play against. Type each name in the text fields. To practice adding 4-digit numbers, type the lowest 4-digit number or 1000 in the first text field and the highest 4-digit number or 9999 in the second text field. Click 'Play'. Add the two numbers together and press the required letter on the keyboard before the bug. You only have a few seconds to work out the answer. If the answer is right, the bug moves forward. This is a very challenging game.
