Lesson 2 - Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Pattern Blocks allows students to become familiar with different geometric shapes, and find the fractions in the shapes.

To use Pattern Blocks, click on a shape and drag it into the workspace. Select a shape by clicking on it. Once selected, the shape can be moved to any location on the workspace. Click on the tools on the top panel to select and drag, rotate, find more information about the shape, or to clear the workspace. To remove a shape, drag it to the recycling bin.

Fraction Model prompts students to model fractions using a variety of shapes.

To use Fraction Model, click on the pull-down menu to choose a shape. Drag the sliders to change the value of the denominator and numerator. Changing the slider corresponds to changes in the model, fraction, decimal and percent given.

 

Changing Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions lets students practice converting mixed numbers into improper fractions.

To use Changing Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions, click the 'Start' button. Input the answer in the text box next to the 'Check' button, then click 'Check'. See if your answer is correct. Continue to change other mixed numbers into fractions.
