Lesson 3 - Making Predictions

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Making Predictions, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Goal

Make predictions, conduct experiments, and describe conclusions.

Instructions for Use

What are Your Chances lets students experiment and compare probabilities by increasing or decreasing the number of dice rolls to affect an outcome.

To use What are Your Chances, input the number of rolls of the dice in the text box. Click the 'Roll Dice!' button. A graph will detail how each of the dice rolled and the likelihood of rolling each number. Click on 'What's Up with Probability?' for an explanation on how probability works.

Roll the Dice lets students make predictions and experiment with probability.

To use Roll the Dice, choose the number of dice to roll and the number of times to roll them from the pull-down menus. Click the 'Roll!' button. A graph details the number of rolls and the number of times each sum of the dices was rolled.

Chase Me lets students experiment with probability.

To use Chase Me, the tortoise moves one place forward when the sum of the dice rolls is 2, 3,4, 5, 10, 1, 12, and the hare moves one place forward when the sum of the dice rolls is 6, 7, 8, 9. Click 'Play' to begin. Click either 'Throw the dice once' or 'Through until there is a winner'. 'Throw the dice once' lets students watch the progress of each roll. 'Through until there is a winner' quickly steps the students through the game automatically.

Students can change the scores assigned to the animals by clicking 'play again change the score' and selecting the sum of the dice rolls for the tortoise and the hare.

Complete the KS3 worksheet to notice the distribution of the number of throws in a game as the probability of winning changes.

Random Samples allows students to understand the steps for making predictions based on probability.

Have students read and follow the step-by-step questions.

Predict Outcomes allows students to use probability to predict outcomes.

Have students read and follow the step-by-step questions. Click on the "Let's Practice!" link atthe bottom of the Web page to practice predicting outcomes.
