Lesson 3 - Counting Square Units

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Counting Square Units, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Yellow Shape helps students compare areas by counting square units.

To use Yellow Shape, click on the small blue circle and drag the blue square over the yellow blocks in the rectangle. Count the number of yellow squares in the rectangle to find the area of the shape in square units.

 

Area Explorer prompts students to investigate the area of different shapes.

To use Area Explorer, slide the 'Adjust Maximum Size' slider to change the shape of the units. Click the "Draw New Shape" button. Determine what the shape's area will be and type your answer into the text fields. Click the 'Check Answer" button.


To draw a new shape, click the 'Draw New Shape' button.
