Lesson 2 - Measuring Area with Square Units

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Measuring Area with Square Units, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Estimate, measure and compare areas using square units.

Instructions for Use

Square Units lets students find the area of a figure by counting squares.

To use Square Units, count the squares to find the area of each figure. Use the pull-down menus to check if students' answers are correct.

 

Comparing Area prompts students to compare areas using square units.

To use Comparing Area, click on the small blue circle and drag the blue square over the rectangle. Have students find the number of blue squares in the rectangle to find the area in square units.

 

Area Explorer prompts students to investigate the area of different shapes.

To use Area Explorer, slide the 'Adjust Maximum Size' slider to change the shape of the units. Click the "Draw New Shape" button. Determine what the shape's area will be and type your answer into the text fields. Click the 'Check Answer" button.

To draw a new shape, click the 'Draw New Shape' button.
