CHAPTER 6

FUNTASTIC FAIR GAMES

TASK

This Web Quest continues with Fun Fair theme of the Chapter 6 Chapter Task. In pairs, students will research 2 fair games using information found on a Web site. Together, they will estimate how much supplies they will need. Using a supply sheet, they will choose an appropriate quantity to buy at the best price. Students will be responsible for explaining their choices.

MEETING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS

The Game Sheet can be completed in pairs or individually.
Students can use base ten blocks, calculators and play money to help them make their decisions.

NSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS

Together, read the Introduction and Task sections. Ask students if they are familiar with any of these games or have ever played them. Brainstorm some of the supplies you would need for each, as well as the object of each game.
Once students are at their computer stations have them go to The Carney Games. Given the ever-changing nature of the Internet, check beforehand to ensure that the site is still up and running. Conducting a search using the key words 'carnival games' should provide you with at least one site that will provide similar information if this site is no longer available.
Have pairs choose 2 games to work with. Encourage them to look at the pictures of the games, as well as read the description to help them write their own descriptions and estimate the amount of supplies they will need for each game. They do not need to include tables or large equipment in their calculations.
Have pairs print a copy of the Fun Fair Supply Sheet and 1 or 2 copies of the Game Sheet, depending on whether they will be completing it individually or as a pair.
As students are completing the Game Sheet, observe and/or interview students to see how they are interpreting and carrying out the task.
As a class you may want to discuss and compare how the different pairs solved the problems.
