Thomson Nelson Expands Presence in Canadian Education Market

Acquisition broadens First Nations, English and French language offerings in targeted regions

Toronto CANADA – July 4, 2006 – Thomson Nelson, a leading Canadian educational publisher and part of The Thomson Corporation, the world’s largest provider of corporate and professional learning solutions, today announces the expansion of its presence in the Canadian education market, specifically in Western provinces, helping to solidify its overall leadership position.

As part of this expansion, Thomson Nelson acquired Les Editions Duval, Inc., a Canadian publisher of curriculum and instructional materials. Les Editions Duval develops materials in First Nations, English and French languages specifically for the Canadian market, Canadian curricula and Canadian students in grades kindergarten through grade 12. Its strength in literacy and mathematics for the French first language and immersion markets will enable Thomson Nelson to leverage simultaneous English and French offerings to customers that are demanding bilingual versions of the same product. This market continues to be a publishing objective for Thomson Nelson and brings the business closer to being a complete solutions provider for Canadian educators.

“As we increase our presence in the Canadian education market, Les Editions Duval will significantly strengthen our French language publishing capability, broaden our English language coverage and create new opportunities in First Nations publishing. It brings a talented team of new authors and publishing professionals to Thomson Nelson,” said George W. Bergquist, president of Thomson Nelson. “We continue our commitment to providing our customers the greatest choice and value in learning materials and this union will greatly broaden the set of solutions available from one source, Thomson Nelson.

Duval founder partner Jean Poulin says, "Duval's management and staff are all excited about continuing to work with in Canadian educational resources publishing, now with the support of Thomson Nelson. Duval's owners look forward to joining the Thomson Nelson family, and to carrying through on Duval's traditional programs and the initiatives we have planned together."

"We see a perfect fit between the strengths and direction of our two companies," adds Glenn Rollans of Duval. "Joining Thomson Nelson gives Duval new capacity and momentum to create some truly exceptional resources for students and educators in Canada. We believe Duval brings to Thomson Nelson a unique publishing program and team that will make the combined company stronger in specialized areas."

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
